Board No. 2 - Magnolias: The Other Flower

I had an idea yesterday to do a post on magnolias because I live in Washington, D.C., and everyone's talking about the cherry blossoms right now — but I truly prefer magnolias, which are almost as equally abundant in this city. (Here's a photo of a beautiful blooming magnolia tree IN Washington from Etsy seller WillBPhotography.) Anyway, this morning when I saw a post over at Within Purple Lemon Designs about a giveaway with Etsy seller AaronOverstreetArt and his beautiful photo of a magnolia in bloom, I decided to go for it. (See his photo in the middle.) I ended up finding more amazing magnolia items than I could have ever imagined!

So, I am going to admit something a little embarrassing. My name is Andrea and there was a time in junior high/high school — I truthfully don't remember when exactly — that I signed my name &rea. Oh, I thought I was cleaver. Well, even though I am past that phase, I still really love the beautiful shape of ampersands and have been looking for one — maybe either wooden or large letterpress — for my apartment. Everyone's talking about Earth Day, so some local D.C. foodies (FoodieTots and ArugulaFiles) decided to try a "Blog for the Bay" day, urging bloggers to write about the Chesapeake Bay and then link to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s petition urging the EPA to quit delaying action to help save our Bay. There is so much good food and fun to be had, even beyond all the delicious crab, which is unfortunately suffering because of the ever-deteriorating conditions of the Bay. I was just in Annapolis last week for work, and it was such a fantastic day that it lifted my spirits all week (I highly recommend oyster shooters at Middleton Tavern). So, here's my ode to the Bay and to the Eastern Shore — oh how many memories I have!

Board No. 27 - Ginkgo Fan

My favorite tree of all time is the ginkgo. It's my dad's favorite, too, so I guess it shows I'm still a daddy's girl, but for a tree it has so much meaning behind it. I mean it's a living fossil, how neat is that. Anyway, the reason it's in my mind today is that the little baby leaves are starting to come out on the thousands of ginkgos that line D.C. streets. It's one of the first trees that have greenery at this point in the year, letting me spring is officially here (that and the 90-degree weather...).

Board No. 46 - Naval Academy

One of the many reasons I have been so bad about posting here is that I was writing an article about Annapolis, home of the U.S. Naval Academy. Maryland's capital is known for many things, but I like to use the phrase that it is a "drinking town with a sailing problem." It's so fun — full of history, good food and relaxing waves. Anyway, that's clearly what has inspired this post — that and Memorial Day is coming up!:

Board No. 48 - Cocktails and Steaks, Oh My!

So, I was also busy this week writing a review of Morton's the Steakhouse's newest book, "Morton's the Cookbook" (creative name...). The book is full of not only steak recipes, but also some amazing cocktails, salads, desserts and entrees that were all over the culinary spectrum. So, that inspired this post even though my items are a lot more kitschy than the always-classy Morton's would ever serve up — also look at it for some interesting Father's Day ideas:

With Wimbledon going on, the peak of the tennis season has hit. I thought it would be apropos to seek out some fun tennis-theme items on Etsy — maybe for a U.S. Open party or a quick match on the courts yourself.
