It's funny that my first several picks for this post were necklaces since I wear the same necklace almost every day. Maybe my subconscious is telling me that I need to replace it since it's missing a couple stones - and these are all nice, suitable alternatives for daily wear. Board No. 124 - Cleaning Up the Beach

My friend Julia is stopping through town today on her way to "wintering" in South Carolina - and this post is dedicated to her, I can't wait to see her. She was inspired a couple months ago while walking along the beach in Montauk, N.Y., and has started a blog about what one person can do easily in their day-to-day life to make the world a better place. Board No. 123 - Back to Work

It's been forever since I have worked on this blog, and have likely lost most of my followers, but I really felt I was spread too thin with a new job, school and life to do it for the past year. Well, the job is no longer new and I am a month away from graduating -- and all I can think about lately is how much I miss cruising around Etsy! I've gotten glimpses here and there since a lot of MICA students are on the site and the College is partnering with Etsy for our newest degree program - an MPS in The Business of Art and Design, written about here on Storque - but I missed it and this blog.

Anyway, enough said. Here is a roundup of items posted on Etsy around 3:30 - when I had a few minutes of free time at work - as a way of reintroducing me and my tastes to the blog world. These are eclectic choices but really reflect me and my style. I will start doing themed boards again (hopefully quite regularly), and it will be interesting to see how my tastes have changed in the past year.

Sometimes green, red and gold are just too, um, boisterous for the message you're trying to get across. If I was decorating a home for the holidays, I really love non-traditional colors like peach and powder blue, just a slight shift on the color wheel and toned down to about 10%.

Board No. 119 - Christmas Tradition

This week marks the famed Rockefeller tree lighting as well as many others around the world, and that doesn't discount the thousands and thousands of people who light their homes in holiday spirit. Even though I'm Jewish, I just love all the holiday decorations this time of year, especially lights people put in trees. (Just like the abstract print at right by Etsy artist TRMACKSTUDIO.) Living in the city for nearly five years now (Fun fact: I actually moved into the District on Christmas Day), I miss a lot of the outdoor decorations you expect to see in the suburbs -- renters and condo owners just don't celebrate in the same over-the-top, blow-the-electric-bill way.

Last night I went to the Oval Room (near the White House) for drinks with some friends and to visit the amazing sommelier there, Brent Kroll. Definitely try the white pinot and the cab franc, but the odd highlight of the evening was a special cocktail Brent created infused with bacon - it tasted just like breakfast, with maple syrup and a smokey bacon follow. I have been rereading "Travels With Charley" by John Steinbeck, something I do every few years around this time of the year - the book takes place over a three month period from just after Labor Day to winter, and captures all seasons in Steinbeck's trip across the country. It's one of my all-time favorite books and I take away something completely different from it each time I read it, depending on where I am in my life. Well, I am doing this post to honor one of the main characters, someone who set the spirit of the ride: Charley, Steinbeck's aging French blue poodle.

Board No. 112 - Pyrex Love

Wandering around town the other day, I ended up near one of my favorite places in D.C.: the Renwick Gallery. It's one of the Smithsonian museums, but because it's not on the Mall, it doesn't get crowded with tourists. It's not very large, and I don't usually like most of the exhibits, but there is one room, the Grand Salon, that has floor to ceiling art on the walls and comfy couches and chairs in the middle, making it a great place to just sit back and think or read a book.

While there, I decided to take a stroll around the rest of the museum, and I found one statue that made me fall in love with Pyrex all over again. Now, if this was made of any other material, I don't think I'd be as intrigued, but you've all seen my avatar, and my store, and if you could only see my cabinets... This statue, appropriately titled "Amphora....Save," must have weighed a ton, and somehow the whole center vase-like section was just being held up by the glass outer shell. It just shows how strong Pyrex is - and it boggled my mind! Well, to honor this statue by Brent Kee Young, I thought I'd do a post of all Pyrex glass!

I know it's been a long while and I am very sorry for that. My life was turned upside down last month when I got laid off and I have made it my full-time job to find a new one. (Anyone have any leads? I'd like to switch careers toward marketing, which is part of the struggle.) Anyway, not to be a downer - because even though this isn't an ideal situation, I've actually stayed really positive through the whole thing - I wanted to put together a board of job-hunting supplies for anyone else in a similar boat, or if you're just looking for a career change.

I know it's a little early to start thinking about Thanksgiving, but it's so hard for me since it's one of my ultimate favorite holidays. The nice thing, though, is that all of my favorite holidays are right around now — probably because I just love fall so much: Sukkot, the Jewish autumnal hut celebration, and Columbus Day, the most random holiday that I get an entire week of recess off for!

Board No. 101 - Back to School: In Style

I was glancing through some of Etsy's back to school "gift guides" and I have to say not that many of them said "school" to me. The "scholastic style" one, seriously, I didn't see scholastic in it at all (like this one?). I mean, there was a couple notable exceptions, but overall, these clothes might be appropriate for college-age students, but even then, most of them wear jeans and Ts to class. Here are some more-likely picks for college-bound wares (and I even included some unisex items!) — and for as much as I was feeling color in my supplies, I'm feel neutrals in clothes for the fall, I don't know why. Most of these items were found searching "jersey" in the clothing category since the fabric is the ultimate lazy-man's wardrobe necessity — it doesn't need to be ironed, it's easy to wash, and it's good to cuddle up in all day — it's great for the wear and tear of long college days:

Post No. 99 - Back to School: It's in the Bag

I already did my back to school board way back in June, kind of as a joke, since I am in grad school and don't get a summer vacation. We're finally feeling summer round these parts. Washington, D.C. — built upon a swamp — is usually 90+ degrees with the same percentage of humidity from, oh, about June to October. But this summer has been so amazingly nice — until this week! And now, it's gross out ... Well, to battle the summer heat, find a cool vintage fan, a skimpy little dress and a refreshing beverage. Board No. 94 - Crack Snap Shot

I just got a new camera for my birthday (thanks Dave!) and it takes some pretty awesome photos, which I'm pretty excited about for my store listings. The last item I listed was photographed with my old camera and I was almost hesitant to post it because the photos were shaky (though the bowls were cute). For those Etsy sellers who want some photographic advice, The Storque has written many posts about it. (UPDATE: Ha! Right after I posted this, I checked my e-mail to see that Etsy' success tip today was about photography, too. We all just think alike...) So, I have been randomly searching through Etsy noticing some of the most amazing photography — and all for item listings, not for photo prints, though I would think about buying some of them...

These mustache glasses by BreadandBadger I'm featuring because the photographs showcase the product perfectly: in use in a funny way (the girl); the glasses full, so that the design can be better seem; and the product being made. Great example of how to sell a product through photography!

I love when a fashion piece (or, really, any item that can be used in different ways) is modeled or displayed in numerous styles so that you can visualize various ways to wear it. This convertible scarf by fray is a great example because if it was just laying folded on a table, you'd see the pretty colors but not realize the utility and function of the buttons in creating different looks.

It's just a little funny without being silly and the dog makes the shot without distracting from the object itself. And by the seller using the dog in most of the store's product shots, it gives it consistency and branding; the dog automatically becomes recognizable to the store and is the mascot of sorts!

I just think the background here adds so much to the photo. By it being the same color family but being out of focus, it draws out the best qualities of what is in focus. Too many sellers have busy backgrounds that distract from the product image, especially when it's in small preview/list mode.

I featured these shoes on a previous board and every time I see them they catch my eye. Now, I don't usually recommend playing around with a photo too much because it can take away from the sincerity of the product, but in this case it showcases it very nicely — plus, it makes it look like it came out of a magazine.

For this one and the next one, it's all about showing relative size. You can give the dimensions of a product, but what does 52" mean when you are picturing something in your mind. By putting an object that is either a common size (like a penny) or the intended user (like a baby) in the same frame, your eye can see relative size of the object. Plus, babies are really cute!

* I didn't include bead photos even though there are some awesome micro shots, but there's just too many sellers who do a good job in this category. Also, I didn't make this into a "board" because it would have cutoff some of the photo composition, compromising some of the integrity of the shot and making it harder to prove my point - but do keep in mind that Etsy automatically crops everything into those horrid little squares and you want to make sure that the focus of your photo is your product.

Board No. 93 - Around the 4:20 Time Frame

I was in training all day for work, and got out around 4:15 (15 minutes late, I may add!), so I rushed over to my computer to see what was new on Etsy - what I had missed that day and if there were any new trends in the 8 hours I had been away. I'm not obsessed at all ...

So, you may ask, what's the big trend I noticed: I'm seeing a lot more fall items starting to pop up, which I actually love since it's my favorite season! Check out this fantastic fabric pumpkin that I am going to save and feature in another board. Also, I noticed a lot more mid-century pieces of decor and more '40s and '50s style clothing. Is this a big lead-up to the "Mad Men" premiere? Maybe I'll do another feature on that trend, too!

Board No. 92 - My Very Own Office

My man and I are starting to look at homes in the hope of buying soon and I'd like to find one we can afford that has three bedrooms, making it so that he and I can have our own offices. One of the places we've looked at, which I happen to love, has just this and one of the reasons I love it is that the room that would be my office (and guest room because it's the larger of the spare rooms) is fantastic. It has a sky light and is pentagonal, which is unique and fun. I've already got the entire room decorated in my mind: it would be in aqua and red since I already have a couple art pieces that mean a lot to me in this palette, and I've always been drawn to it; it would have a comfy couch that pulls out to be the guest bed, thus loads of fun pillows; some of the colorful photos of my Kitch inventory used as artwork along with the others that mean a lot to me; a big wood desk with room for my laptop and my sewing machine. I read in a magazine about a year ago that necklaces we out. Ladies on the red carpet were opting for a bare neck to emphasize the elaborate necklines popping up a lot in fashion. Well, if that was a year ago, I'd like to say that the new trend continues that idea, but adds just a little something. I love all of the "minimalist" jewelry designs I'm seeing everywhere lately — if that's even what they are called. Well, what I am seeing with this is that metals are being used to create a shape, a letter, something simple, and isn't all fussied up with beads and buttons and whatnot. (Many of these sellers I found while searching through the pounce undiscovered section, so they're in search of their first sale!)

Yes, this post is inspired by the classic rock anthem. Board No. 84 - The Symbol of Summer Into Fall

It was really hard to choose which of EtsyBlogger of the Month miesmama's items to feature — there were so many fantastic items to pick from. She does a lot of unique crafts and I especially love all of her work with felt, and so much of it seemed summery, even if it's made out of a heavier material. The one that stood out to me the most, though, was the tote with a coneflower, likely because I am starting to see these flowers pop up all over the place and I just love them. To me, they symbolize the transition from summer to fall — one of my favorite times of the year (probably because it's around my birthday)!

I am definitely not the first person to make note of this, but as Etsy becomes increasingly popular, there are more and more sellers and it is harder to standout among the crowd. I signed on to Etsy yesterday (I wanted to post this then, but I've been pretty busy) to find these wonderful pillowcases featured on the front page of the site. I just love them, probably because of the different vintage materials she used I can count the number of sheet sets that I had growing up (3). I love it!

Well, that's inspired this collection of vintage items that have been repurposed to have a whole new life ahead of them. I know it's chic right now with recycling or upcycling or whatever, but I just love vintage and if something is tattered or dated, it's nice to feature it in some other way...

Board No. 71 - A New Kind of Stitch 'N Bitch

I love that cross stitch is the new knitting and that it's totally being transformed into the 21st century. I remember learning how to cross stitch from my grandma at a very young age, and I even to this day I still have a very elaborate one that she did for me in my bedroom and a very simple, kitschy one that I did hanging in my bathroom. It's such a fun hobby that is easy to pick up whenever you have a spare minute, throw in your purse for on-the-go stitching. And so many of the new patterns I'm seeing for sale on Etsy are perfect for a modern house — not you're typical grandma-pattern. (These are both patterns and finished stitches for those at any level.)

Board No. 57 - ACEO What?

While I was searching for items for my New Jersey post the other day (it was a fun trip, by the way), I came across a Zach Braff Original ACEO drawing — I was searching Garden State, the nickname of the state and my favorite movie and soundtrack of all time — and I was baffled as to what an ACEO was. I may be way behind the times here as there are hundreds of them to be found on Etsy, but I had to wiki it.

It turns out to be something pretty cool: ACEOs, otherwise known as Artist Trading Cards, are "miniature works of art about the same size as baseball cards. ... The ATC movement developed out of the mail art movement and has its origin in Switzerland."

I'm thinking about maybe doing a wall of several of them framed. I found so many I liked that I made four color groupings that can each work as a larger collage — and I could have made so many more but this is already excessive. Here are some of my favorite originals:

We've been picking the red, ripe strawberries from our backyard for more than a week now and are so excited that there are still loads of flowers on the plants — meaning there's going to be more strawberries for weeks to come.
